who we are

West Papua Interest Association (WPIA) was founded by Pastor Karel Waromi and some colleagues in Black Water Refugees Camp in East Awin, Kiunga Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The organization was founded in 1990 under the aegis of the United Nations flag and UNHCR.WPIA established along with Pastor Karel Waromi appointed as Deputy Central Committee which was formed by United Nations to set the West Papuan Refugees in East Awin Western Province. It is an indigenous organization comprised of indigenous peoples  of West Papua, having founded and formed the (Kelmas-kelmas) Community Group which consists of the tribes of indigenous West Papuans who were in camp at that time.

In the year 2000 Voluntary Repatriation under the cooperation of the Indonesia Government and Papua New Guinea which is under the supervision and sponsored by UNHCR, together WPIA with West Papuan refugees returned to West Papua.


WPIA presence in West Papua has been reported to President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gusdur) and the Minister Coordinator of Politic, Law and Security (Menkopolhukam) Susilo Bambang Yudohyono also to the Office of the Provincial Government of Papua.
WPIA has a number of Regional Representatives and Envoys in Land of West Papua,
WPIA with the vision and mission is to fight for the recognition  of Human Rights of West Papua's indigenous peoples to self-determination based on the UN Charter, the International Covenant (ICCPR and ICESCR), the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
West Papua Interest Association continue  amplifying the voices of indigenous West Papuan on the international world for a self-determination and to make the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples a living document, so West Papua Peoples could stands same tall and sits same lace as other nations on the earth.
